How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring at DINIDU

Designing a custom engagement ring lets you shape something deeply personal in metal and stone. With Sri Lankan couples increasingly looking for customised options, check out the step‑by‑step guide on how to custom craft an engagement ring, with examples, decision checklists and the small details that make a ring comfortable for decades.

Step 1: Clarify Vision, Lifestyle & Budget

Step 2: Choose the Centre Stone

While diamonds are the quintessential engagement ring stone, sapphires are also a popular choice in Sri Lanka.

  • Diamond: Brilliant sparkle, standardised grading and timeless allure.

  • Blue Sapphire: Rich colour options, unique character with excellent durability.
  • Centre Stone shapes to consider: While round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, princess, marquise and the heart shape are the most popular cuts, choose what suits the wearer’s hand and personal style.

Step 3: Decide on Ring Metal & Colour

  • White Gold or Platinum: Metals that exude brightness make diamonds look crisp, emphasising an attractive contrast with blue sapphires. While white gold is a popular choice, platinum offers longer durability and value.

  • Yellow Gold: Offers a warm and classic allure and harmonises with lighter coloured diamonds and brings out the richness of blue gemstones.

  • Rose Gold: Evokes romantic hues with a softening contrast against both diamonds and blue sapphires, while flattering many skin tones.

Step 4: Select the Ring Setting & Profile

  • Solitaires are the classic diamond engagement ring style that leads with a diamond centre stone.

  • Halo rings enhance the ring’s brilliance and perceived size, while acting as a guard to secure the ring’s centre stone.
  • Three‑stone rings are symbolic of the past, present and the future, and often supports a larger central stone and relatively smaller side stones, offering great finger coverage.
  • Bezel: Offers a sleek and seamless look without protruding prongs, offering greater protection to the wearer with an active lifestyle or someone who often works with their hands.

Step 5: CAD & Prototype

  • While some jewellers may provide a resin or wax prototype for your review upon the confirmation of a design and order, at DINIDU, we will translate your vision into a 3D rendered CAD ring (Computer-Aided Design).

  • Once you have selected your design, you are required to complete an advance payment, after which we will proceed to a CAD ring to ensure you are able to get a 360° view of the ring you have selected. This will allow you to make necessary changes and finalise the design for crafting.

Metal Choices: White, Yellow or Rose?

Metal selections can change how your sapphire reads:

  • White Gold/Platinum amplifies brightness and contrast, offering a crisp and modern look.

  • Yellow Gold evokes warmth, a classic feel and deepens the perception of blue.

  • Rose Gold adds a romantic hue that softens the contrast while evoking a vintage feel.
Practical tip: Craft a band with a mix of two or more gold tones or platinum to combine each colour’s distinctive style.

Pairing Your Wedding Band with a Sapphire Engagement Ring

Match the mood and profile of your engagement ring:
  • Classic stack: A slim pavé wedding band in the same metal as your engagement ring keeps the look timeless and lets the sapphire remain the star.
  • Contoured band: A contoured or curved wedding band follows the shape of a large halo or low-set bezel engagement ring, fitting snugly with no gaps.
  • Two-tone: Pairing a white-gold band under a yellow-gold sapphire solitaire creates a striking contrast that highlights the stone’s colour.

Step 6: Crafting & Stone Setting

Once you approve the CAD ring, the ring will be crafted to your exact requirements. Design experts will complete the ring according to precise stone settings and will proceed with quality checks, symmetry and will safely set prongs before the item is delivered to the client.

This may take from 3 to 4 weeks, depending on the design complexity and the availability of gemstones. However, orders with shorter delivery timelines can be discussed with the team and negotiated as per the design studio workload.

Step 7: Final Fitting, Warranty & Care

Upon the completion of a design, final fittings can be made, followed by appropriate adjustments of the ring size. At DINIDU, the first ring-sizing is offered free for design engagement and wedding rings. Resizing is available for only 2 sizes up or down from the crafted ring.

Customers can continue to wear their rings daily by cleaning regularly at home. Simply soak it in warm, soapy water for about 30 minutes. Gently brush it with a soft brush under running water to remove any residue, then leave it in clean, normal water for another 15 minutes. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth before storing.

Our customers at DINIDU can enjoy a lifetime of free cleaning and polishing services for their custom engagement rings by visiting our boutique. While DINIDU crafts come with a lifetime warranty on craftsmanship and manufacturing defects, speak to our team to learn more about our warranty coverage.
